Hey,are Fernando Corena,Renato Capecchi,Ezio Flagello,Italo Tajo,Mariano Stabile,Salvatore Baccaloni,Eberhard Waechter,Graziella Sciutti,Juan Oncina,Jose van Dam and Gabriel Bacquier in the list of MyFavorites as well? Didn’t see their names just now when I saw the video. I don’t think Mario Sereni warrants a mention here..
That is almost ghastly. In a critics list he would come very high, but as he is so known for beautiful recitals of lieder, rather than voice-spectacular arias (although he has performed in many many operas), perhaps that is the reason. In the Classic CD 1999 poll of 20th greatest singer, the critics chose him as 2nd, even before Flagstad and Callas.

In some cases, I was going for more obscure singers in my mentions because I was sure singers like Cappuccilli would receive a number of mentions–my mistake. Of course he deserved more!

Mike, is the last name on the list correct? Was there in fact a singer with the name Renato Zenatello? I know there was a Giovanni Zenatello and a Renato Zanelli.
Also glad to see Gerard Souzay and Eleanor Steber on the list.
Please don´t forget, these are the names of singers with only three votings. Maybe Gobbi, Ruffo and Corelli will appear among the singers with more votings in the forthcoming videos! Mike
An impressive list for sure, with some names not so well known by the opera going public. I’m particularly happy to see Maureen Forrester made the list, a wonderful contralto who is sometimes underrated. I’m sorry Maria Caniglia, a great verismo soprano if ever there was one, is not there and also Lily Pons, a personal favorite from childhood, whom I prefer to Mado Robin in the coloratura repertoire. Thanks for your great work putting this project together.
Glad to know that names like Cerquetti, Gencer, Lilli Lehmann, Reizen, Taddei and Tibbett are on the list. For names like Alagna, Cura and Netrebko, their credentials for inclusion are open to questions. Most regrettable is the non-appearance of names like Gobbi, Ruffo and Corelli, who should have been considered seriously for “100 greatest singers”. A project like this will never be able to satisfy on every count. It is nevertheless worthwhile as a reference point. Thanks for the good work.
Da stimme ich zu: Ganze Karrieren, vor allem im Show-Business, sind weniger durch das Können als vielmehr über die physische Erscheinung eines Künstlers ermöglicht worden. Zwar finde ich persönlich nicht, dass Villazon “gut” aussieht, aber ein typisches Beispiel ist doch Corelli. Überall war zu lesen, wie sehr sein Aussehen seine Partnerinnen beeindruckt hat. Über seine “Gesangskunst” hat sich kaum jemand geäussert. B. Nilsson und G. Bumbry nannten seine Stimme nur “laut”.

In der Tat. Ein Beweis für die Macht guter PR Arbeit. Aber keinesfalls für die Qualität einer Stimme, bzw. des Gesangs!
Villazon, zudem vielsprachig, charmant und gut aussehend. Das dürfte auch bei der Netrebko nicht unerheblich sein.
Jedoch scheinen hier viele echte Kenner am Werke zu sein. Was mich sehr beeindruckt! Und mich sehr neugierig auf den Rest der Liste macht!
Ja, interessant ist, dass man mit einem Projekt wie diesem so eine Art “Stimmungs-Barometer” erstellen kann. Auf die Gefahr hin, mich zu wiederholen, aber ich frage mich wirklich, wenn die Nomination für Villazon so gering ausfällt, wer kauft dann seine Platten, die angeblich “Bestseller” sind. Ähnlich auch mit Netrebko: Eine massiv durch Werbung herausgestellte und demnach “an den Mann” gebrachte Sängerin – aber gevotet haben nur drei für sie… So was finde ich sehr interessant!
Eine sehr interessante Liste mit vielen Überraschungen. Einige, daß sie überhaupt in die Liste kamen (Forrester; Netrebko), andere, das sie nicht mehr Stimmen bekammen (Böhme; Güden) etc.
Jedenfalls danke ich sehr für die Fortsetzung der “personal opinions” sowie für die viele, tolle Arbeit überhaupt!
